| This site was created as part of the work undertaken during the two years tenure by the authors of Research Exchange Fellowships awards by the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society of London. |
| Martin Angel retired in 1997 after working for 32 years at the Institute of Oceanography Sciences and the Southampton Oceanography Centre, and for eleven of those years he was head of the Biology Department at IOS. In 2003, he retired from co-editing the journal Progress in Oceanography after 25 years. Since retiring he has returned to the study of halocyprid ostracods and has helped to teach their identification at a number plankton identification courses. He has collated his own data and material collected during 32 research cruises, most of them conducted in the North Atlantic. He has compiled a data base of all published records of oceanic planktonic ostracods as well as checking and identifying much of the wealth of ostracod material collected during Discovery Investigation cruises in the Southern Ocean of the 1930s. 42 of his 150 scientific papers have involved aspects of the ecology and taxonomy of this poorly known planktonic group, and have included identification manuals for the North and South Atlantic. He has benefited considerably from the opportunities afforded by the British/Polish Exchange Fellowship awarded by the Royal Society to work with his co-author on this website.

| Kasia Blachowiak-Samolyk - Her interest to the Antarctic region started while studying the biological oceanography at the University of Gdansk. She had the opportunity to continue studying Antarctic zooplankton while preparing her Ph.D. thesis on distribution and population structure of pelagic ostracods around the Antarctic Peninsula. These studies resulted in several publications. After graduating in 1997, she began working under the Polish Academy of Sciences umbrella, initially in the genetics laboratory, but then moving to join the Baltic Sea monitoring group as a zooplankton specialist. In 2002 she was appointed to a permanent position in Department of Marine Ecology at the Institute of Oceanology, Sopot, where her research is focusing on Arctic zooplankton, which is proving to be complimentary to her earlier studies on Southern Ocean zooplankton and so is extending her interests in both polar regions. Thanks to a British-Polish Exchange Fellowship she has had an excellent opportunity to collaborate with Martin Angel who is an outstanding specialist in taxonomy and biology of planktonic ostracods.
